Did you know California’s Delta has roughly 700 miles of waterways? You can’t simply drive a car along those channels, but you can travel by boat through waterways connecting the San Francisco Bay area and Sacramento.
It’s called the California Delta.
If you’ve ever spent time there, you know it’s more than rivers and channels. People come to fish, hunt ducks, boat, kayak, or just enjoy some time on the water.
I’ve kayaked the Delta around Antioch with my friend Bill. One thing I remember is its smell. At just the right time of day, the air can be wonderfully fresh and earthy. Depending on where you are, the trees and surroundings change, and so does the smell.
It’s one of those places you have to experience to understand.
So What Does This Have to Do With My Brother Joe?
Well, Joe loves BBQ.
And I’m not going to lie. A candle that smelled like a good steak or ribs cooking over a fire would sound pretty great to me!
But then I started thinking. BBQ isn’t just steaks and ribs. What about fresh fish cooking over an open fire? That counts too, doesn’t it?
And what about everything surrounding the fire? The fresh outdoor air. The trees. The earthy smell of the ground. That unmistakable hint of something cooking over a flame.
That’s where the idea came together.
My brother Joe and my brother Rob spent a lot of time fishing and duck hunting. Their outdoor interests eventually included hunting bigger game, too.
When we developed a candle inspired by Joe, we wanted more than a straight BBQ fragrance. We wanted to capture the atmosphere around it.
The woodsy, earthy notes. The fresh-air feeling. The warmth of an ember. Just enough smoky character to remind you of a fire and the moments spent around it.
That’s how Joe’s Delta Ember and its variations became part of our California Chapters™ Collection.
A Little Surprise in Martinez
We brought this fragrance to an event in Martinez, California, on October 11, 2026. Visitors smelled the competing fragrances and voted for their favorite.
Joe’s Delta Ember won by nine votes.
People especially loved its earthy tones. For me, that was something special. What began with my brother’s love of BBQ and memories of time outdoors had become a fragrance other people connected with, too.
That’s what I enjoy about creating these scents. They begin with a real person, place, or memory from our lives. Once someone takes one home, it might become part of their own story.

Maybe it’ll remind you of fishing with your brother. Maybe it’s a family BBQ, a camping trip, or an evening outside while somebody tends the fire.

Joe’s Delta Ember: La historia en español
El Delta de California. La familia. Las parrilladas. Y la vida al aire libre.
¿Sabías que el Delta de California tiene aproximadamente 700 millas de vías navegables? No puedes recorrer esos canales en automóvil, pero sí puedes viajar en barco por vías de agua que conectan el área de la bahía de San Francisco con Sacramento.
Es el Delta de California.
Si alguna vez has pasado tiempo allí, sabes que es mucho más que ríos y canales. Hay quienes van a pescar, cazar patos, pasear en barco, remar en kayak o simplemente disfrutar del agua.
Yo he recorrido en kayak la zona del Delta cerca de Antioch con mi amigo Bill. Algo que siempre recuerdo es su olor. A ciertas horas del día, el aire tiene una frescura muy especial, con ese aroma a tierra y naturaleza. Según la zona en la que estés, cambian los árboles, cambia el entorno y también cambia el olor.
Es uno de esos lugares que hay que conocer para entenderlo.
¿Y qué tiene que ver todo esto con mi hermano Joe?
Bueno, a Joe le encantan las parrilladas.
Y no voy a mentir: ¡a mí me encantaría una vela que oliera a un buen bistec o a unas costillas cocinándose al fuego!
Pero me puse a pensar. Una parrillada no se trata solamente de bistecs y costillas. ¿Y un pescado fresco cocinado sobre una fogata? Eso también cuenta, ¿verdad?
¿Y qué hay de todo lo que rodea ese fuego? El aire fresco. Los árboles. El olor de la tierra. Ese aroma inconfundible de algo cocinándose sobre las llamas.
Así fue como la idea empezó a tomar forma.
Mis hermanos Joe y Rob pasaron mucho tiempo pescando y cazando patos. Con el tiempo, su afición por las actividades al aire libre también los llevó a la caza mayor.
Cuando creamos una vela inspirada en Joe, queríamos algo más que un aroma a parrillada. Queríamos capturar todo el ambiente que la rodea.
Las notas amaderadas y terrosas. Esa sensación de aire fresco. El calor de las brasas. Un toque ahumado que recuerda al fuego y a los momentos compartidos a su alrededor.
Así nació Joe’s Delta Ember, junto con sus variantes, como parte de nuestra colección California Chapters™.
Una pequeña sorpresa en Martinez
Llevamos esta fragancia a un evento en Martinez, California, el 11 de octubre de 2026. Los visitantes olieron las fragancias que competían y votaron por su favorita.
Joe’s Delta Ember ganó por nueve votos.
A la gente le encantaron especialmente sus notas terrosas. Para mí, fue algo muy especial. Una idea que nació del gusto de mi hermano por las parrilladas y de nuestros recuerdos del aire libre terminó convirtiéndose en una fragancia con la que otras personas también conectaron.
Eso es lo que más disfruto de crear estos aromas. Empiezan con una persona, un lugar o un recuerdo verdadero de nuestras vidas. Pero cuando alguien lleva una vela a casa, también puede hacerla parte de su propia historia.
