Leonard’s Plum Tree

Leonard’s Plum Tree

Some memories don’t come back as pictures first. Sometimes, they come back as a scent.

When I was a young kid, I remember going out into my grandfather Leonard’s front yard with him, where there was a big plum tree.

Sometimes my siblings would come along too, and we would all gather underneath it while Grandpa reached up into the branches and picked fresh plums for us.

There was something special about eating a plum that had just been pulled from the tree.

I can still remember taking that first bite—the sweetness, the fresh smell of the fruit, and all that juice running down my face because the plums were so ripe and juicy.

As a kid, you didn’t worry about making a mess. You just stood there under the tree and enjoyed it.

They Didn’t Need to Become Anything Else

To the best of my memory, my grandparents never made anything with those plums.

No plum cobbler. No jam. No pie.

Looking back, maybe they should have, because those plums were that good.

But maybe that is also what made the memory special.

They didn’t need to become anything else.

They were simply fresh plums picked by my grandfather, handed down to us beneath that tree.

The Scent That Brings It Back

Years later, when I smell a sweet, ripe plum, I don’t just think about fruit.

I think about my grandfather Leonard.

I think about my siblings standing beside me.

I think about that front yard, that big plum tree, and being young enough that one of the best things in the world was having Grandpa reach into the branches and pick something just for you.

Leonard’s Plum Tree was created to hold onto that memory—the sweet scent of a freshly picked plum, the juice running down your face, and those simple moments underneath Grandpa’s tree.

And maybe when you smell it, it brings back someone from your own life—a grandparent, a backyard tree, a fruit stand, or a summer afternoon you haven’t thought about in years.

Because sometimes the smallest memories are the ones that stay with us the longest.

Holiday & Time of Use

Leonard’s Plum Tree begins with a simple family memory, so it fits naturally into more than one season. It can feel especially meaningful around Grandparents Day, Father’s Day, summer family gatherings, reunions, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any time family stories start making their way back into the room.

The story itself is not tied to a holiday. It is about the kind of memory that can return at any time of year when a familiar scent brings someone to mind.

Every Candle Has a Story.
